Spices to get rid of cancer

Cancer is a major burden of disease destroying human life in both developed and developing countries. WHO has reported that deaths from cancer are projected to increase to over 12 million in 2030 (1). Some plant-derived drugs having no side effects have significant potential to prevent cancer. Some research proved that some spices have cancer-preventive agents and may prevent cancer. The Indian spices that contain cancer-preventive agents are cinnamon, turmeric, fennel, garlic, ginger, black pepper, saffron, black cumin etc.

Cinnamon bark

Cinnamon, one of the traditional spices, commonly used in Indian kitchen has potential to combat cancer. Cinnamaldehyde is the main constituents in cinnamon bark which exhibited significant anticancer activity (2). Cinnamon bark can be taken at dosages of 1 to 1.5 g/day in tea, milk or meal to prevent cancer. Its heavy uses may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Turmeric root

The spice turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-cancer activity (3). Turmeric root can be taken at doses of 1 to 2g/day in milk or meal to prevent cancer. Mixing turmeric root (2g) with black pepper seeds (2g) and olive oil can increase the anti-cancer activity of curcumin and it may also be used to prevent cancer.

Fennel seeds 

Fennel seeds exhibited an anti tumor effect due to the presence of phyto-constituents and antioxidants (4). Anethole is main components of fennel seeds which have anticancer activity (5). Fennel seeds can be taken at doses of 1 to 2g/day in tea or meal to prevent cancer.

Garlic clove

Garlic contains organosulfur compounds which have possible cancer-preventive properties (6). The use of garlic clove may give protection against cancer development (7). Garlic clove can be taken at doses of 0.6 to 1.2g/day in meal or alone to prevent cancer.

Ginger rhizome

Ginger rhizome containing gingerol and zingerone are reported to have antioxidant activity and so may be protective against cancer (8, 9).  The use of ginger rhizome reduces cancer development.  Ginger rhizome can be taken at doses of 1 to 3g/day in meal or alone to prevent cancer.

Black Pepper seeds

Black pepper seeds contains piperine have protective action against cancer with strong antioxidant properties (10). The use of black pepper seeds reduces cancer risk. Black pepper seeds powder can be taken at doses of 1 to 2g/day in tea or meal to prevent cancer.

Saffron threads

Saffron contains crocetin, a natural carotenoid dicarboxylic acid, is cancer-fighting agent (11). The consumption of saffron threads protect from cancer development.  Saffron threads can be taken at doses of 1 to 1.5 g/day in tea or meal to prevent cancer.

Black cumin seeds

Black cumin seeds containing a compound called thymoquinone which have protective action against cancer (12). Taking black cumin seeds daily can prevent cancer disease. Chewing or taking black cumin seeds (0.5 to 2 g/day) in tea or meal prevent cancer.
